What is compatibility testing?

Compatibility testing in software testing is a non-functional type of testing conducted to assess the compatibility of an application in different environments. The environment can include operating systems, browsers, hardware platforms, various screen extensions, and more.

The purpose of testing is to check whether the software product performs the tasks assigned to it, whether it is available to users from any device, browser, operating system.

Compatibility testing requires considering all possible use cases for the software, as well as prioritizing what browsers are most popular, what devices they are most used on, and so on. After identifying the key parameters, QA engineers test the cross-browser compatibility of the product.

How is compatibility testing done?

To implement software compatibility testing, it is necessary to check the interaction of the released product with the environment in which it will be installed on various hardware. Then the testers test the software from the perspective of its end user and the configuration of the workstation.

The key step is to compile a coverage matrix, in which all options for working with a resource are preliminarily fixed. In this case, the types of browsers and their versions, graphic data (relevant for gaming applications), types of devices (smartphone, tablet, PC) and other factors are taken into account.

During testing, each configuration from the coverage matrix is ​​checked one by one, the operation of the site is analyzed in detail. Based on the results of the check, problems with the display and functionality of the resource are fixed, which must be eliminated. For testing, we use a methodology that includes manual and automated checks.

What are the types of compatibility testing?

The types of software compatibility testing are differentiated depending on what is taken as the basis for testing the compatibility of the application. This could be:

  1. Hardware. Checking software compatibility with different hardware and its settings and configurations.
  2. OS. Checking software compatibility with different operating systems: Windows, macOS, etc.
  3. Software. Checking software compatibility with other software.
  4. Browser. Checking software compatibility with different browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.
  5. Mobile platforms. Checking software compatibility with Android and iOS.

There is also a slightly different classification to characterize the compatibility testing service:

  1. Cross-platform testing. Some functions may have problems with certain operating systems, therefore it is necessary to test the operation of the application on various versions of Windows, Unix, Mac, Linux, Solaris, etc.
  2. Cross-browser testing. Correct operation depends on the type of browser. The layout should be cross-browser to ensure the same visuals, accessibility, functionality and design in all browsers. It is necessary to check scalability, extensibility, borders for elements in focus, absence of JS errors (left bottom corner of the page). It is necessary to check the work in such browsers as: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Edge of different versions.
  3. View on mobile devices. Despite checking the operation of web applications in different resolutions on a computer, errors on mobile devices are often not noticed. Therefore, it is highly recommended to check the correct display and operation of your web application on mobile devices of different operating devices, as well as on tablets.
  4. Database testing. It is necessary to check the correctness of communication with the server, check the compatibility of the server with software, hardware, database and network. You also need to check what happens when an action is interrupted, when you reconnect to the server during operations.
