A reliable and flexible CMS platform is the foundation of any e-commerce business. Regardless of whether you operate in the global market or run a small shop, someday you will have to go online and provide your customers with an easy and convenient way to purchase their favorite products. Shopify and Magento are the two most popular platforms today with more than 500 000 users worldwide. They are often pitted against each other, but when you deep dive into details, they are completely different with its benefits, specific features and pitfalls.

Are you still of two minds which the best CMS platform for your business is? Then we have an idea we’d like to float. Why don’t we organize the battle between Shopify and Magento to see the main pros and cons of each content management system? Here we go!

1.Functionality. Shopify is a one-size-fits-all e-commerce solution that enables users to launch online stores from scratch with innovative tools, such as Pentaho, Import.io, Walkbase, Canopy Labs, etc. This CMS allows  managing all business operations, handling orders, accepting payments, customizing your storefront from a single account. Tastes differ and Shopify knows it well! The platform provides more than 100 themes which appeal to a diverse audience. No matter whether you have a retail store or sell training via the Internet, you will find the tools to design your website in the best way. Above all these, a plenty of handy features boost your business development:

  • email templates;
  • analytics;
  • profiles management system;
  • advance shopping carts, etc.

In other words, with everything Shopify delivers, you have nothing to split hairs about. However, if you have already fallen in love with Shopify, hold on! It certainly has a set of cons. While Magento does not charge any extra сosts, merchants have to take into account transaction and credit card fee while setting the prices. Additionally, when you integrate a third-party payment solution, be ready to fiddle about for a while…

The same happens with blogs. Exporting posts is not hassle-free. You need to install extra applications to backup your content while all Magento editions have it in default.

Magento is tailored to the needs of web development professionals, medium and large business owners. The  main advantage here is flexibility to get a full control over platform management and web optimization. Backed by an extensive support network, Magento is a scalable CMS solution and buyers can benefit from a superior shopping experience. At the same time, the platform does not require advanced technical skills. You don’t have to be a talented web designer to make your store unique and innovative. All users have access to an online store builder with numerous themes to customize the website.

The number of websites powered by Shopify is significantly bigger. The platform is used by Amazon, which explains its popularity. This CMS also has a more flexible pricing policy that might appeal to SME companies. Nevertheless, if you plan to grow your business, Magento comes with more extensions, features and useful options.

2.Payment Solutions. Choosing a secure and reliable payment gateway is essential to eliminate the risk of frauds and cyber crimes. Shopify Payments is fully integrated into your online store. You don’t have to weight up all the pros and cons of third-party systems. Just rely on Shopify and provide your clients with integrated payment solutions to ensure a hassle-free experience for your buyers.  Magento provides several payment options: PayPal, American Express, Visa, Mastercard are at the tip of your fingers. Analyze and decide what best fits your target audience!

3.User-friendliness. If you think that managing an e-commerce platform is a complicated process that requires advanced technical skills, Shopify and Magento will debunk this myth with an intuitive and convenient interface. Don’t waste your time for watching long tutorials or reading technical materials. Go to the website, follow the hints and you will know what to do.

4.Hosting. When you choose Shopify as your CMS platform, your website is hosted by the company. It means you don’t have to worry about the technical side of running your online store. Be sure your servers are regularly updated to maintain secure operations on your website. On the contrary, the Community version of Magento delegates this responsibility to you. So, be ready to search for a domain name and hosting on your own!

5.Cost. While Magento has free and premium editions that differ in functionality, Shopify requires monthly fee of $29 to get started. You will get all the basic features to build a fully operational online store. However, to grow it further, your expenses might increase up to $107 depending on your needs.

Magento has a feature-rich Community version that comes for free. It includes a set of extensions to manage your website and attract the first customers. Nonetheless, if you need something extra, you can purchase a Magento EE Cloud for $2000 or Enterprise edition for $22 000 per year.

Despite common misconceptions, Magento and Shopify differ much in terms of functionality, payment and hosting solutions. When it comes to selecting the right e-commerce platform, you decide on the future success of your business. It means you cannot make a “leap of faith” and try different options before you find a perfect one. In this case, it is better to define what you need, stick to your guns and don’t let marketers talk you into changing your mind.

You ask who won the battle? We leave it up to you to decide!
